A Summer to Treasure Discussion Questions

Discussion Questions:

  • This story is about family relationships. Each family is unique. Some people have lots of siblings, others are only children. There are blended families, adoptive families, and foster families. No matter what your unique family looks like, it is special and an important part of who you are. What are you most grateful for when it comes to your family?
  • Luke spent a lot of time focusing on fitting in with a certain friend group, but in the process, neglected other aspects of his life. Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation? Are there things you’d like to currently change about who you spend your time with?
  • Celia faced a difficult situation with her two best friends. Have you lost friends because of bad decisions? If so, how did you handle it? Were you able to confide in your family? If you handled the situation like Celia and kept it to yourself, why?
  • Austin felt frustrated that his older siblings continued to treat him as the little brother. Have you ever felt someone in your family doesn’t see who you’ve become? Have you taken time to understand the new interests of family members?
  • Each of the siblings tended to use their phones as an escape mechanism, turning to them when they didn’t want to interact with each other. When they finally put their phones away, they were able to enjoy and truly experience their vacation. Do you feel you spend too much time on devices? Do you feel technology has an overall positive or negative role in your life?
  • Grandma Grace had a secret that she kept from the whole family. Did you enjoy how the secret unfolded? Do you think she succeeded in helping her grandchildren reconnect? How do you think the story would have developed if she had told them the truth from the beginning?
  • Grandma Grace offered the kids some advice throughout the story. Have you received some words of wisdom from a grandparent or parent that stays with you?
  • If you have siblings, have you ever thought of them as your first and lifelong friends? Does this change how you view your relationships? Does it make you want to change anything?
  • The family connected over the personal stories they shared. Do you think that was an effective way to draw them closer? Is this something you might consider implementing in your family?
  • Were you intrigued by the lost relics? Did you know that every Catholic church contains the relics of different saints? Do you know which saints’ relics your church possesses? If not, make it a family project to find out and learn about that faithful servant of God.
  • Who was your favorite character, and why?
  • What is your most memorable family vacation? What made it so unique?
