The idea for this story came to me in 2019 while I was with my family on a vacation to Arizona and Utah. The gorgeous canyons, the interactions between my children, and memories of my own childhood road trips sparked my creative juices. Through the following years, the story grew and changed to become the current family adventure.
This story is a little different from my usual books because this novel focuses on the unique relationship between siblings. Our siblings are our first friends, they are likely the longest relationships we will have in our lives. While the dynamics can be complicated, these unique bonds are a blessing from God that not everyone experiences. Often, brothers and sisters are close when they are young but sometimes during the teen years, sibling relationships can strain as individuals begin to discover themselves and are dealing with personal challenges.
Through this story, I also wanted to explore how technology can steal our focus, drawing teens, especially, away from family and faith. The three siblings in this book become immersed in an epic adventure through an unlikely source, their grandmother, as her past is slowly revealed through postcards and journal entries.
For those who have enjoyed the Catholic Teen Books anthologies, you may recognize the matriarch of this family. The adventures of a young Grandma Grace are featured in my contributions in Treasures: Visible & Invisible and Shadows: Visible & Invisible.
